Spotlight: K-9 Nicky

Meet Nicky, Centa’s predecessor. Nicky was purchased by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in September 2005 to replace retiring canine Centa. Grant money from the Johnson County Citizen's Against Substance Abuse (JCCASA) enabled the Sheriff’s Office to purchase the canine. Nicky is a 3 year-old female Dutch Shepherd who comes to the Department from the Netherlands. Nicky was purchased from "Northern Michigan K-9, Incorporated" of Harrison, Michigan. Nicky and Canine Handler Travis Derrett graduated from Northern Michigan K-9 Training on September 30th 2005.

Nicky began her new career on the streets of Johnson County in October of 2005. Nicky is trained as a Dual-Purpose Police dog, meaning she is trained to detect narcotics as well as perform general patrol work. Some of Nicky’s abilities include: Article Searching, Area Searching, Building Searching, Tracking, Obedience and Narcotics Detection.

Derrett reports that as a rookie officer, Nicky is figuring her new role out well. Despite the low pay, long hours, and dry dog food, Nicky is ready and anxious for work every day.

Welcome aboard, Nicky!
