Greenwood Officers Shot; Suspect Killed.

Officers Down!
The Johnson
County Sheriff's Office assisted Greenwood Police with a homicide investigation
resulting from a police action shooting on Wednesday evening, February 21, 2007.
Greenwood Police Officers Eric McElhaney and Officer Jay Arnold were both shot
in the incident - McElhaney was shot multiple times. One witness told a
Sheriff's Detective that both Officers McElhaney and Arnold's actions that he
witnessed were heroic. Johnson County Sheriff Terry McLaughlin arrived on
the scene within minutes of the incident and provided additional manpower for
the City of Greenwood. Many officers came out and helped either dispatch
or take emergency calls without being asked in a show of support and solidarity.
Officer McElhaney has instructed S.T.O.P.S. (a police course teaching officers
how to conduct safe traffic stops) to many Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies at
the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy during their initial training; Both
McElhaney and Arnold's actions and survival during this traumatic incident are a
testament to their skills as law enforcement officers. The men and women
of the Sheriff's Office salute McElhaney, Arnold, all other officer's involved,
and all dispatchers involved in this critical incident; Your proficiency,
professionalism, and skill are recognized and appreciated; Our thoughts and
prayers are with you and your families as you sort out this tragedy.
