Missing Autistic Woman
"We are very glad there is a safe ending to this"
- Sheriff Doug Cox
18, 2011 at 1247 hours, Johnson
County Sheriff’s Dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call from a caretaker at the
Capitol City Residential Health facility located at 403 San Marcos Drive in
unincorporated Greenwood, White River Township, Johnson County, Indiana. Capitol City Residential Health is a
residential style facility where caretakers assist mentally and physically
disabled residents. Caretaker
Torica Clark reported that 25-year old Crystal Harrison is autistic, and was
outside playing in the yard with a ball.
The caretaker noticed that she no longer heard the ball bouncing outside,
and when she looked out to check on Crystal, she could not locate her. Ms. Clark checked the immediate area
then called the Sheriff’s 9-1-1 Communications Center.
Sheriff Doug Cox and more than a dozen Sheriff’s Deputies and
Detectives were joined by members of the White River Fire Department to search
the residential area around the Villas II subdivision. Of great concern were several area
residential swimming pools and unsecured retention ponds – as the missing
individual was unable to swim.
Sheriff Cox requested additional support from canine units and a
helicopter from the Indiana State Police.
In addition, the non-profit service “A Child Is Missing” was utilized to
perform mass notification phone calls to 1,600 area residents; in that message
was a request that the public be on the lookout for Ms. Harrison and to check
their area pools and retention ponds.
“A Child Is Missing” offers a free mass notification service to law
enforcement agencies who are attempting to locate missing children or endangered
Moments after the mass notification calls were sent, at 2:26 p.m.,
Sheriff’s personnel located the missing 25-year old who was found at 777 Valley
Way Road in Greenwood. She was
returned unharmed to the Capitol City Residential Health facility.
As a result of the “A Child Is Missing” mass notification calls to
area residents, Sheriff’s Deputies reported many area residents driving around
the area looking for the missing woman.
The Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank all residents who took the time to
help locate this individual and see that she was returned to her residence
