Sheriff's Deputies Apprehend Bank Robbery Suspect

On April 26, 2012, Trafalgar Police and Johnson County Sheriff's Deputies responded to Trafalgar to investigate a reported Bank Robbery. Responding officers learned that a man reportedly armed with a handgun entered a bank and demanded money, fleeing the business on foot. Responding officers and Sheriff's Deputies quickly set up a perimeter around the area and a Sheriff's Canine Unit was started.

As officer's continued checking the area, Sheriff's Deputy John Cave spoke with members of a construction crew which had been working near a site along County Road 300S; men at the site reported seeing a man matching the description walking northbound along the Indiana Rail Road Company Railroad tracks from 300S. Deputy Cave broadcast the information and Sheriff's Deputy Chris Mattison quickly responded to the next crossing north at State Road 44 where he observed a man matching the description of the robbery suspect walking northbound on the railroad tracks.

Sheriff's Canine handler Kerry Hamilton and multiple other officers, Deputies, and Detectives converged near the area. Deputies Cave, Hamilton, and Mattison (pictured above) chased the man as he defied orders to stop and fled into thick briars and into a pond in an attempt to escape apprehension. The suspects efforts, however, were futile. The three Sheriff's Deputies apprehended the man and walked him back to State Road 44 where he found his new form of transportation: a Johnson County Sheriff's Jail Van. Evidence located on the suspect indicated likely involvement in the bank heist.

The 33-year old suspect was arrested on charges of Resisting Law Enforcement, an outstanding warrant for Parole Violation, and Possession of Marijuana. Charges relating to the Trafalgar Bank Robbery and other possible charges are pending as the investigation develops and continues. This apprehension would not have been possible without the prompt and excellent response of the Trafalgar Police Department.
