Two more Burglars Bite the Dust
(July 27, 2004)

On the evening of July 25, 2004, Sheriff's Deputy Ted Belser was dispatched to the 700 block of Happy Hollow Court in the Carefree North Subdivision. Deputy Belser met with homeowner's who reported that someone had broken into their home and stole a safe containing valuable heirlooms, collectible coins, and a large amount of cash. The residents suspected that their estranged son and an accomplice were involved in the Theft. Deputy Belser summonsed the assistance of Sheriff's Investigations Division Major Steve Byerly and Detective Bill Pfifer. Within 3.5 hours, Detective Pfifer had located the suspects in the Knights Inn Motel at Harding Street and Interstate 465 in Indianapolis. Sheriff's Deputies and Detectives rushed to the scene. The suspects were not the only thing that Detectives found inside the room; Nearly all of the stolen collectors coins and heirlooms were recovered. Detectives located 218 grams of Marijuana inside the room, but they were very disappointed to only find a small portion of the stolen money. Crime Scene Technician Bill Baldwin happened to notice a dark object inside the light cover in the bathroom ceiling. Always attentive to details, Baldwin opened the fixture to examine it. The object was a piece of insulation. When he looked around further, Baldwin observed a plastic bag rolled up standing alongside a wall on a top ceiling panel near the light cover fixture. Inside the bag was the missing $8,000.00 cash. The victims received nearly all of their stolen property back just hours after the heist occurred. 19-year old Steven Haptonstall and 18-year old Kevin Miller, both of Greenwood, were both arrested on charges of Class B Felony Burglary. These two thieves planned an evening of living the "high" life; Now, thanks to the Deputies and Detectives of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the highest they will get will be an upper bunk bed inside the Johnson County Jail.
